But how was this magnificent landscape created? Spanning nearly 40 kilometers in diameter, the entire Santorini region is part of an active volcanic system that has been shaping new land from lava for over 20,000 years.

The most significant eruption occurred 3,600 years ago, during the era of the ancient island of Stronghyle. This cataclysmic event was one of the most violent volcanic eruptions in Earth’s history, causing the central part of Stronghyle to collapse into the depths of the Aegean Sea.

In its wake, a colossal crater, or caldera, was formed, measuring 12 kilometers in diameter. The fragmented remains of Stronghyle gave birth to the present-day islands of Santorini, Therasia, and Aspronisi, each framing the majestic caldera.

After the eruption, a thick layer of white tephra (pumice) blanketed the islands, while black volcanic stones scattered across the landscape. Life on the islands was completely eradicated, leaving behind an otherworldly terrain.

Today, the volcano remains active, its presence felt in the warm breath rising from the caldera’s depths. As you sail into the caldera, you’re entering a realm shaped by millennia of volcanic activity.

To the left, the cliffs of Oia rise majestically, while to the right, the rugged edges of Riva, Therasia, showcase a striking geological “cake” of red, ochre, and black lava layers intertwined with tephra and scorched rock.

Here, in the heart of this dynamic landscape, you can’t help but feel the pulse of the earth beneath you—a humbling reminder of Santorini’s ever-evolving story.
